Can I Bring My Parents To UK?

It is possible to bring a parent or parents to the United Kingdom through a number of different visa categories. The applicant and their family’s unique circumstances will determine which option they ultimately select.

Adult Dependent Relative (ADR)
The umbrella of UK family visas includes the Adult Dependent Relative (ADR) visa route. To facilitate the immigration and settlement of adult dependant relatives of British citizens, persons settled in the UK, or persons in the UK in receipt of refugee or humanitarian protection, the UK has established a Family Migration Scheme.

To qualify for this type of visa, the applicant must show that they have a close relative or child who lives in the United Kingdom and who is able to give them the necessary long-term personal care that they need without using public funds.

Applicants must also show that they have tried every other option in their own country and that the treatment they need is either not available or too expensive for them to pay for.

Approval for an Adult Dependent Relative visa is exceedingly challenging. The Home Office has a very high standard for proof; only the most extreme cases are enough to convince them to give a visa in this category.

Settlement Procedures Within the European Union
Under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), relatives of EU citizens who are eligible and live in the UK can still apply for settlement. To get into the UK, they can fill out an EUSS Family Permit application. Once they’re there, they must fill out a Pre-Settled Status application. They can apply for “settled status” after five years of continuous residency in the UK.

This option also has restrictions, including a minimum amount of need that must be demonstrated (mostly financial) and the fact that the dependency must have existed before the Brexit date (December 31, 2020). But this option might work for people living in the UK who are from the European Union, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland and their dependents.

Various Various Variously Routed Options
If all the parent wants to do is visit their adult children in the UK on a regular basis, a longer-term visit visa might be better. The maximum length of a visit to the United Kingdom is 180 days, and visitors are not permitted to settle or work there.
