Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

On June 12, 2005, Steve Jobs was the guest speaker in America’s Stanford University

You have to find the thing you love. If you haven’t found it yet, don’t settle. Keep looking, don’t settle. Remembering that I’ll be dead soon, is the most important tool to help me make big choices in life. Because almost everything, all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure, these things fall away in the face of death, leaving truly of what is important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. No one wants to die. Even people who wants to go to heaven doesnt want to die to get there. No one has escaped it. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. For now, that new is you, but someday you will gradually become the old and will be cleared away.  Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped in dogma which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other people’s opinions drown out your inner voice. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Stay hungry, stay foolish.

Stay hungry. Binigyan tayo ng Diyos ng kanya-kanyang kakayahan, lakas at talino. When an architect is asked what his best building is, he usually answers, “The next one.” – Emilio Ambasz

Matayog man yan or mababa, maganda man yan o hindi, but staying hungry will allow us not to think that we have achieved enough and reest on your laurels: to be satisfied with your achievements and not to make an effort to do anything else. Stay hungry.

I have read one company which is selling cold fruit drinks. Their motto says this: “We will be as Big as the Creator would allow us to be.” This company is now multimillion business in the Philippines and has at least 1,000 branches and growing. When you allow God to increase you because you are willing then you will get it.

Look at the prayer of Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:10. Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me…Staying hungry doesn’t mean you have to stop. Keep moving.

In the book of Matthew 5 it says: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst … for they shall be satisfied. It applies to most things in life. Stay hungry. Grow as much as our Creator wants you to be. Don’t be contented. Crave to become the person God wants you to be. Manatiling nag-aaral, nag-eensayo, nagpapalakas, nag-iimprove. Keep improving, don’t be arrogant as if you have made it already.

Are we always complaining?

St Paul said: “one thing I do…I forget what is behind and press on towards what is ahead…” Forget mo na yung mga past…move on and press on towards what is ahead. Staying hungry is pressing on, moving forward. You cannot live a successful life having one foot on the first base, but expecting to do a ‘homerun.’ You must learn how to let go of the past. Learn to stay hungry, craving for the next one.

One day, Peter and other fishermen just finished and sorting out the nets. “Master, Simon replied, “we have worked through the night without catching anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to tear.…

Staying hungry means that we don’t rely on our understanding. You’re still hungry to be taught, willing, able and available to learn. Once a person tells himself or herself that he or she has it all, or knows it all, then that’s the beginning of his or her downfall.

Albert Einstein said: “The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know.” There are many other high intellectual people who appreciate learning and staying hungry in terms of potentials. They don’t stop. They are like a shark that kept swimming and constantly moving otherwise it dies.

Itanong natin sa ating mga sarili, why? There are many people who listen to tapes and online streams, attend seminars, churches but their lives remain the same. They are not moving. Maybe they are already settling down. They are no longer hungry for life. They’ve lost their appetite for greatness. I encourage you today to awaken that giant within you. You still have it in you.You were created in the image and likeness of God…the Creator of the Universe has breath life into you. He wants you to be daring.

Moses tells us in Genesis chapter 11, it was Terah, Abram’s father, who brought Abram (along with other members of the clan) out of Ur (11:31). Haran, Abram’s brother and Lot’s father, died while they were still in Ur (11:28). One other thing is clear from chapter 11: when Terah took his family to Haran, it was with the intent of going all the way to Canaan (11:31). Somehow, when they reached Haran, they settled there and never went on to Canaan in Terah’s lifetime. Canaan, from what we know is the land where milk and honey flows, hence is called “The Promised Land.”

But Abraham’s father, Terah settled in Haran. He did not continue. He dwelled, he lived, he resided, he stopped in Haran and never pursue in his lifetime the journey to the Promised Land. He could have been the Father of Faith. But because he stopped and lost his “appetite” to carry on, he missed that opportunity of seeing the wonderful works of the Lord. Are you stopping now to your “Haran” so to speak? Or have you lost your faith that things are no longer possible…Because of this, because of that…the medical report says this…the government says this…my friend tell this…we lost our appetite to live life to the full. It does not mean you are not contented for what you have. You can be thankful for what you have but don’t settle yet. Stay eager and committed and stay on course to pursue your dreams. Always curius to learn something new.

You only live once, only once you walk in this lifetime. As Jobs said, you are already naked. There is nothing in the way not to pursue the thing you love. Whatever it maybe, keep pursuing. Is it a big house, a luxury car, a business, children to finish college or university, health, freedom, promotion, restoration of relationships, keep pursuing. Never stop developing your life.

Stay foolish. Which means you must be ready to step out of your comfort zone. Try something new – new approach, new perspective. There was a saying a new definition of insanity:

Insanity means doing the same thing but expecting a different result.

God wants to show you new things. In Jeremiah 33:3 says thisL ‘Call to Me and I will answer you, and tell you [and even show you] great and mighty things, [things which have been confined and hidden], which you do not know and understand and cannot distinguish.’

They don’t know what God’s plan in your life is. You know when you stay foolish, you accept your need to learn. You accept that fact that you will make some errors. That’s how you learn anyway.

When there is acceptance of being foolish, there is humility.

“If my people shall humble themselves and pray…I will hear from heaven and heal their land.”

Stay foolish means your full confidence in God to not rely on your understanding. The Bible is clear, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and He will crown your effort with success.”

Try to cross the road wearing a black eye glassed with a walking stick…people will give way to you…just like that. Pag di natin at willing tayo na matuto, makikita mo tuturuan ka ng mga tao or ng Diyos or ng buhay itself.

When we lack wisdom: “let’s ask God who gives wisdom…”

Never brag about what you have and what you know. But in your own, you know what you can do.

Stay foolish.
