UK Sponsors /Employers News from April 6, 2024

The Home Office has said that sponsors will not have to update their sponsor licences after April 6, 2024.

In other words, if your sponsor licence runs out on or after this date, you won’t have to apply to extend it or pay someone to do it for you.

To get ready for the change, the Home Office has added 10 years to the end of all licenses that were set to expire on or after April 6, 2024. There’s nothing you need to do.

You can ignore the notice to renew your licence if you have already got it.

If you have already asked the Home Office to renew your sponsor licence, they will get in touch with you and return your fee.

In the online Sponsorship Management System (SMS), go to the “Licence Summary” section to see when your sponsor licence expires.

What it means to Employers /Sponsors

Existing sponsors will be glad to hear this because they will no longer have to pay money and deal with a lot of paperwork every four years to renew their sponsor licence.

Before, 90 days before their licence expired, sponsors had to send in an application to renew it. The Home Office charged the same amount for renewing the support licence as they did for the first application. The renewal fee for medium and large sponsors was £1,476, but the renewal fee for small or charity sponsors was £536.

Most of the time, sponsors would have to wait up to eight weeks for the Home Office to decide on their application to repeat.

Since the number of licenced sponsors in the UK keeps going up every year, it’s likely that the Home Office was spending more time and money on renewal applications. Getting rid of this requirement should give the department more time and money to work on other things, like making sure sponsors follow the rules and digitising the UK’s immigration system.

Even though the requirement to renew has been taken away, the Home Office still puts a lot of emphasis on sponsor compliance, so companies should be ready.
